Building on Your Team’s Self-Managing Skills

Self-leadership is an essential skill for success. The ability to successfully self-manage and lead oneself is a vital quality that will impact your interactions with others and impact positively on your personal development. Self-leadership is about gaining control, developing responsibility and assertive leadership qualities.

Self-leadership is not just about taking responsibility or getting results. It’s also about managing stress, learning to take responsibility for your own actions and managing stress during performance. You need to be able to manage stress and perform to your full potential. If you possess strong self-management abilities, you can set challenging goals for yourself and take the lead to achieve them without feeling overwhelmed.

In order to succeed at self-management, you must develop the following skills. Self-leadership requires that you possess the ability to change without fear of losing self-control, manage confusion and frustration, manage negative emotions, develop positive thinking, set and meet goals, and think positively about obstacles, challenges, and difficulties. These skills are necessary if you want to effectively manage and direct your own actions, attitudes, behaviors, and emotions in life. The ability to positively influence others positively is a necessary quality for effective self-leadership.

Self-leadership involves accepting responsibility for your own actions and behaviors, understanding the strengths and weaknesses that you have, taking breaks to refresh and recharge, identifying your strengths and weaknesses, and exercising self-discipline. Taking breaks is an important part of self-management. Without it, your energy level plummets, your mood dips, your concentration lapses, and your productivity and motivation plummets. Taking short breaks, like ten to fifteen minutes, every hour, helps you recharge and rejuvenate.

Developing new skills is a fundamental part of self-management. By learning a new skill or improving one you already possess, you strengthen your ability to manage others and yourself. By making the decision to enhance or master a skill, you are creating a new skill set and strengthening your ability to manage yourself and others. Personal development does not have to be an expensive endeavor.

A key part of building self-management skills is goal setting. A goal is simply a statement outlining what you want to accomplish in a particular area. Your goals can include your goals for accomplishing your objectives, becoming more successful, becoming financially independent, developing better interpersonal skills, increasing productivity, getting or staying pregnant, getting more or better grades, or whatever other goals you might have. Goals change constantly as you grow as an individual, but you should set regular goals for each area.

Self-manage is even more effective when combined with group goal setting. When you work with a team of self-managed individuals, the more involvement there is in defining your own goals and the details of how to reach them, the more effectively you will be able to self-manage and get the team members on track. Sometimes, the most effective way to self-manage is to use a coaching style where one coach is designated to monitor progress and make suggestions as needed. This also keeps individual attention on their own goals and helps to ensure they are reaching their objectives.

The final component is self-managing to engage with others. To enhance your self-management capabilities, spend some time doing what you enjoy – this will put you in a better position to notice when you are not managing yourself and your behaviors appropriately. Also, if you like to attend groups of people who share similar interests, this will also enhance your self-management abilities and help you and your team members to bond. If your favorite pastime is something you do well and you are good at it, try attending social functions where you might be easily distracted by people sharing similar interests.
